MY STORY

Thank you for taking time to explore the story behind PaulTheOctopus.com. My name is TzeKoh, and this extraordinary journey began on the evening of July 7, 2010, during the FIFA Football World Cup. On that memorable evening, I had the privilege of encountering a truly remarkable octopus, named "Paul The Octopus" on a News Channel. This unique creature quickly gained global fame for its amazing ability to accurately predict the winners of World Cup matches. Its presence not only added suspense to the football community but also infused a touch of gravitas, charisma and humor, captivating fans worldwide. It immediately assumed the persona of an Oracle-like figure, swiftly becoming an iconic symbol synonymous with the World Cup and forever embedded in the history of football.

Driven by curiosity, I decided to explore whether the domain name 'PaulTheOctopus.com' had been registered, and to my astonishment, it remained unclaimed. As an avid collector of domains, I swiftly secured it on that very same evening, July 7, 2010. Initially, I didn't attribute much significance to this acquisition. However, within a day of registering the domain, I received an unexpected offer from an individual in North America expressing interest in purchasing it. Despite the temptation, I declined the proposal, recognizing that this domain name held far greater potential for meaningful endeavors. 

In the following weeks, I found myself inundated with inquiries from various individuals eager to acquire the domain name. Although enticed by the prospect of selling, I ultimately chose not to pursue such offers. I firmly believed that this particular domain name could serve a greater purpose, one that would facilitate positive change. With unwavering determination, I made a personal commitment to discover a path forward that would be most rewarding for the football community.

Subsequently, I decided to approach the aquarium where the celebrated octopus was housed. My intention was to propose collaborative ideas related to the domain name.  However, I encountered obstacles when they hesitated to connect me with the senior executive. 

I felt rejected, but it was also at that moment that a strange feeling washed over me.  I felt an overwhelming urge to ensure that the legacy of this remarkable octopus would endure.  I felt obligated, yet for some reason, I couldn't quite explain. 

I then decided to explore the possibility of creating a website that would utilize the domain name. The primary focus of the website would be to provide simple apparel wear with a symbol of the octopus, all while supporting charitable causes. 

To bring this vision to life, I enlisted the expertise of a skilled freelancer to design a distinctive symbol featuring the octopus, which would serve as the definitive brand identity for my site and products. Additionally, I engaged the services of a proficient attorney to secure a trademark for the newly designed symbol. With careful diligence, the trademark application was successfully filed and approved.

However, my elation was short-lived when it was later revealed that the freelancer had replicated the symbol from another artist, by making slight modifications. This unexpected discovery left me devastated, as I was about to file an international trademark for the symbol. I felt disheartened, considering that the freelancer that I engaged was a friend. Nevertheless, he eventually explained his rationale for such actions, emphasizing the challenge of designing a symbol that embodies simplicity, inventiveness, while capturing the essence of "Paul The Octopus" and infusing a touch of gravitas, charisma & humor – criteria that I had provided him.

Determined to ensure authenticity, I made the resolute decision to undertake the symbol design process myself. Little did I anticipate that this endeavor would take me more than 12 years and over 3000 sketches, resulting in the creation of more than 400 distinct symbols, all of which were ultimately discarded. This painstaking process spanned over a decade before I eventually arrived at a symbol with which I was satisfied. Despite its arduous nature, it afforded me the opportunity for profound introspection, ultimately guiding me to launch the PaulTheOctopus.com website with a profoundly meaningful Mission.
